Fetching pages as you

Some pages only show up when you’re logged in: your account, your saved searches, your orders. Frankensurf can fetch those as you, through your own Chrome. Your agent gets the page but never sees your password, cookies or browser profile.

Each saved login is called an identity.

Option Where your browser data stays
LOCAL_ONLY On your machine only. This is the default.
SYNC_ALLOWED On your machine, with encrypted copies sent to places you approve.
CLOUD_MANAGED With a hosted service you choose.
EPHEMERAL Nowhere. A throwaway login for one task.

You can pick any option for any login. Switching is always something you do on purpose. It never happens automatically.

  • Frankensurf checks which login to use before it looks anything up or fetches anything.
  • If it can’t use your login, it tells you. It never quietly fetches the page logged out, as someone else, or from an old copy.
  • The agent only ever gets a name for the login, never the login itself.
  • Saved passwords and browser data are stored separately. Having access to one doesn’t give access to the other.

Only LOCAL_ONLY works so far. The other options can be set up but will say they aren’t supported yet.

  1. Register your Chrome. Start Chrome with remote debugging on, then tell Frankensurf where it is and which profile it uses.

    Terminal window
    .venv/bin/frankensurf executor-enroll my-chrome \
    --cdp-url http://127.0.0.1:9331 \
    --user-data-dir /home/you/.frankensurf/profiles/marketplace \
--profile-directory Default --network-context home --geography Sydney
  2. Register a login on that Chrome. Say which sites it’s for, and how to tell you’re logged in (a page to check and something that only appears when you are).

    Terminal window
    .venv/bin/frankensurf identity-enroll marketplace \
    --executor-id my-chrome --domain www.example-market.test \
    --image-domain images.example-market.test \
    --auth-url https://www.example-market.test/account \
    --authenticated-selector '#account-ready' --login-selector '#login'
  3. Use it.

    Terminal window
    .venv/bin/frankensurf read https://www.example-market.test/item \
    --identity marketplace --images
    .venv/bin/frankensurf identity-status marketplace
    .venv/bin/frankensurf identity-revoke marketplace

Every time it runs, Frankensurf checks that Chrome is still using the registered profile. If anything looks wrong, it stops.

Only one Frankensurf process can use a login at once. This doesn’t affect you browsing normally in other tabs.

When Frankensurf opens a tab as you, it turns JavaScript off in that tab and only allows reading, never posting or buying. Pages that work without JavaScript come back fine. Pages that need it return IDENTITY_SCRIPT_REQUIRED until a safer way to run them is built. Your other tabs aren’t affected.
